She left critics and fans speechless when she dropped a staggering 35 pounds within the span of under 8 months! Initially ‘Fat Amy' had decided to maintain the chubby look as her trademark in the entertainment industry.

During her transition from exclusively doing stand-up comedy to starring in movies, Wilson strongly believed that fat girls would have more ‘comic appeal’ in comparison to slim girls!

So she decided to continue putting on weight so that she would have an easier time being cast in more movies. Surprisingly, her plan worked and she landed more and more roles in movies such as Bridesmaids, Bachelorette, and What to Expect When you’re expecting.

As a matter of fact, one could say that role of ‘Fat Amy’ in Pitch Perfect was created with her in mind! It is also alleged that Rebel was contracted not to lose a drastic amount of weight while filming Pitch Perfect!

In recent years, Rebel decided to abandon the ‘fat and funny’ approach in order to live a healthier lifestyle.

She made this decision in April 2016 and has not looked back since! She also made sure to document her transformation on her Instagram account such that she was able to inspire her fans all around the world.

Diet Routine

In a recent interview, Rebel admitted that she has always loved to eat. In sad times, in happy times; it didn’t matter. Food was an ever-present companion in her life. In fact, she says the hardest part about adopting a healthier lifestyle would be cutting down on her intake of junk food!

Something that a lot of us can relate to! An interesting fact to note is that both Rebel Wilson and Mariah Carey became spokespersons weight loss and nutrition company, Jenny Craig.

To help Rebel achieve her weight loss goals, Jenny Craig created a diet plan for Rebel Wilson that would not only help her lose about 22 lbs. but also increase her energy and avoid lifestyle diseases.

To curb her sweet tooth, Rebel was advised by her nutritionist to increase her fiber intake. This includes oatmeal (for breakfast) whole grains such as brown rice for lunch along with veggies and fruits.

Low fiber in the body normally translates into low sugar levels which leave the body craving for foods high in carbs or sugar. She would also chew on some celery from time to time along with a shot of apple cider vinegar to keep the craving away.

Rebel also lowered her carb intake in order to keep her insulin levels low. So she got rid of bread, chips, French fries, and bagels.

To supplement this part of her diet, rebel snacked on foods that are rich in proteins and healthy fats such as almonds, cashew nuts, chicken breasts, carrots and cucumber sticks with guacamole.

The first thing that Rebel had to do when she began her weight loss journey was to get rid of her sedentary lifestyle. Getting home from work to sit on the couch and chomping down her favorite snack was not going to cut it anymore!

She was advised to include lots of activities into her schedule. And sure enough, the 37-year-old did not disappoint. She shared pictures with her 4.4 million followers on Instagram of herself having completed a challenging hike.

Other activities she takes part in include playing lawn tennis and more recently attending a $4,000 luxury boot camp in Malibu (The Ranch 4.0). At the ranch, Rebel revealed that she undertook extreme hiking, weight training, and even yoga.

In addition to this, Rebel incorporated a number of high-intensity workouts to increase her metabolism. These workouts would take about 5-10 minutes but would be highly effective as they would increase the number of calories burned and ultimately reduce fat build-up.

The workout routine she used most often included core workouts that forced her to break a sweat even while just going about her day at home or on set:

  • Leg raises – Three sets of 10 reps (each leg)
  • Planks – Three sets of 30 seconds with 30 second rest periods
  • Body squats – Four sets of 10 reps
  • Crunches – One set done to failure (60+)
  • Frog jumps – Two sets of 7 reps


Wilson admitted that she initially played the ‘fat is funnier' card but later chose to battle the bulge in order to live a healthier life.

From her decision, we can see that the Bachelorette star did not budge because of the ‘Hollywood pressure’ to lose weight but because she wanted to improve the quality of her life as she grew older.

As a matter of fact, prior to the start of her weight loss journey, Rebel had just launched a plus-sized fashion label in New York which is still doing very well. This shows that she embraces her size and pays no attention to fat-shamers.

She makes this clear even in the clothes she wears as she was recently seen heading to the gym wearing a t-shirt with the slogan ‘Be your own kind of beautiful’ and carrying a designer handbag instead of the traditional gym bag. Something that consistently stands out for Rebel is that she always strives to be comfortable in her own skin.

Clearly, Rebel is not looking to fit in or let her life be defined by anybody else’s standards but her own. In this age of cyberbullying and ‘fat shaming,' his is clearly a mantra that more people should consider adopting.

Her massive following on social media clearly shows how much influence she commands. The reason for this is that apart from her lovable bubbly personality, Rebel life depicts the same ups and downs that a lot of people go through.
