Modalert vs Provigil

Why nootropics?

The human brain requires 8 hours of sleep everyday to functional optimally. Not straight 8 hours though, 6+2 is supposedly the ideal combination with an afternoon power nap factored in. Sometimes, this cycle is interrupted by waking hours stretching into the dark of the night. This might not result in you sleeping less, just that when you do get your sleep after the early hours of the morning or during day time, you aren’t well rested, have concentration problems, and generally lack focus. This manifests in the form of excessive sleepiness throughout your wakeful hours. To combat this condition, we make use of Nootropics.

Modalert vs Provigil: What are they?

These are supplements that work primarily on the activities of the brain. Some effect the neural pathways, other’s block certain chemicals from performing their regular functions, while still others aid and facilitate in enhanced chemical reactions. One such drug is Provigil. Interestingly named as vigil means ‘the period of staying awake when you aren’t supposed to be.’ Provigil then implies that it aids one in staying awake when doing so isn’t easy. In this case, that would be people with extreme daytime sleepiness(EDS) due to narcolepsy or sleep apnea. It’s important to note that Provigil helps combat EDS, it’s not a cure for narcolepsy or sleep apnea.

There’s another Nootropic mentioned in the topic of this write up…Modalert. To wit, both Provigil and Modalert are basically the same chemical combinations of eugeroics. Provigil was developed and patented by a French pharmaceutical company Lafon Laboratories in the 1970s. Patents and generic chemical substitutes of patented chemical combinations are completely different discussions out of the purview of this piece. Suffice to say that Sun Pharma, an Indian pharmaceutical company has the rights to produce the generic version of Provigil, which they market and sell as Modalert.

So, if you are living in certain European countries, you’ll be seeing Provigil on your prescription for treatment of EDS, while Asians are more likely to see Modafinil or its generic version Modalert. Sun Pharma however has a good presence in the North American market and hence both Modafinil and it’s weaker cousin Modalert can be seen in abundant use in the American subcontinents.

Another difference in the two is that, while Europe and Asia look at it as a simple prescription drug, US monitors it as a Schedule IV controlled substance. This is partly due to the fact that elongated periods of use, exceeding 12 weeks could potentially be habit forming. The good news is that, the human body doesn’t develop tolerance to this drug as quickly as it does with psycho-stimulants that have similar biochemical reactions.

The good news is that, the human body doesn’t develop tolerance to this drug as quickly as it does with psycho-stimulants that have similar biochemical reactions. Various studies have established that the same dose is quite effective going for 40 weeks. This implies that your efficiency levels on Provigil will not drop overtime with the same dosage. Please note that going above and beyond the prescribed daily dose for extended periods has been revealed to have negative effects including withdrawal symptoms, anxiety and insomnia.

In addition to promoting wakefulness, Modalert has also found use as the go to drug for treating neurological fatigue. This is a completely off label usage. Neither drug is approved for use with children. Adult dosage shouldn’t exceed 200mg per day.

Provigil vs Modalert

Provigil works by acting as an inhibitor for dopamine reuptake. Modalert has the same biochemical reaction, albeit at a much smaller scale. There are much stronger eugeroics in the market thatpro are more aggressive in effect but Modalert, by virtue of being a mild drug has the advantage of being non habit forming and relatively free of side effects. Before taking the drugs, consult a physician and go through your medical history for hypersensitivity and allergies.

While pregnant women are strictly prohibited from using this drug, different countries have different laws allowing or disbarring breastfeeding mothers from taking Provigil. For e.g., US authorities recommend cautious use while UK and AU do not allow its prescription for breastfeeding patients.

The most commonly reported side effects of Provigil in clinical trials were headache and nausea. Rarer cases reported bouts of diarrhoea, episodes of insomnia, periods of anxiety and nervousness, gastrointestinal problems and dizziness. However, the rate of occurrences of these side effects was less than 10%. Very rarely do patients get severe side effects like skin rashes, sores, hives, swelling of the face or legs, trouble with swallowing, fever, peeling, blisters, or shortness of breath. Patients are advised to not mix this drug with recreational substances or alcoholic drinks.

Provigil, compared to Modalert might not be as strong as other dopamine inhibitors, it’s very selective in the way it effects this reaction. Not only does it work atypically by targeting selective dopamine transporter (DAT) molecules, it elevates histamine levels in the hypothalamus which enhances physiological functions. In laymen terms, apart from keeping you up and focused, it improves your locomotor activity, implying less muscle fatigue.

The most interesting part however is, ingesting this chemical compound also does away with the required sleep of 8 hours that’s deemed healthy. So even if you  spend the night battling restlessness and sleep, popping a Provigil will keep you going through the day without any adverse effects. This bodes well in so far as its chain of chemical reactions in the brain have been mapped, but a complete picture depicting all its physiological effects is still incomplete. It has also been observed that certain combination of genetic factors react much better to Provigil than others.

So far, we’ve highlighted the similarities and common functionality of Modalert vs Provigil. But the subject under discussion is a complete comparison between the two. As we’ve shown, those are few and far in between since Modalert is simply the generic version of Provigil. But here’s a small table highlighting the differences:

Drug/Property Provigil Modalert
In use since 1970 Post 1995
Form Patented Formula Generic Formula
Price $50 per 200 mg tablet $2+ per tablet
Effect Greater efficiency than the generic form. Serves its purpose but not as effective as Provigil.
Addiction Potential Negligible due to both non resistance build up and cost. Almost non existent
Litigation Patented and approved across the globe. Patent challenged and available legally in only a few countries.

Hopefully, we’ve considerably clarified the similarities and differences between Provigil and its generic form Modalert, for our readers to take an informed decision on their usage.
