About

So much of the fitness and health writing out there is so dry you practically have to hydrate after you read it. I think it’s time we injected some humor into the genre.

weighty

What is it: Home Gym Equipment.

Good because: sometimes leaving the house feels like too much.

Bad because: unless you have a weight room, most of this stuff can be unsightly. Trust me.

It’s worse if: you buy one of those giant bowflex thingies or a huge weight set and it just sits in your house, reminding you of all that money you wasted.

It’s your match made in heaven if: have some compelling reason to work out at home, like agorophobia. Or if you have a napping newborn and exactly 30 minutes, tops, to yourself.

It’s your nemesis if: you have crappy form, because in the comfort of your own home, it will just get crappier. And you are highly unlikely to push yourself to new athletic heights doing curls while you zone out on John Stewart.

What is it: Sugar-free Pudding. I’m serious.

Good because: well, it’s sugar-free, it’s dessert, it tastes pretty good considering.

Bad because: um, as good as sugar-free pudding can get, it is still sugar-free pudding.

It’s worse if: you hate the taste of Splenda or Nutrasweet. Or if you worry that artificial sweeteners are going to turn your internal organs into weirdness or make hair grow out of your eyeballs or what-have-you.

It’s your match made in heaven if: you are dying for some safe little sweet thing you can eat daily. And if real sugar starts you on a binge that can last for weeks, ultimately finishing with you holed up under the dining room table eating frosting out of the can while your family tries to coax you out with a Snickers bar. Not that its happened to me, mind you.

It’s your nemesis if: you try and compare it to real desserts made with real sugar. Come back to reality, please.

  2. I also recommend Sans Sucre Mousse Mix. I make mine with soy or rice milk, and it’s really yummy. I’ve only had the chocolate and mocha. Could be yummy with some cinnamon added, too.

If you make two envelopes at a time and pour them into a pie crust (I like Honey Maid), it looks fancy. Which is something I look for in dessert.

  5. There a new sugar-free hot chocolate that’s pretty good. (Its that time of year.) Check out http://www.blvdsorganics.com. It doesn’t have any of the nasty chemical sweeteners used in most sugar-free products.
