I often like to mock the latest and lamest fitness crazes (underwater spin bike yoga!) but when you read about fitness, you can kinda see why people are looking for something new. Basically, there are a few things that are pretty much tried and true and known and effective, and we see this information again and again and again, so I suppose that gets old for folks. I’m not saying there’s no room for innovation–not at all–but any good innovation rests on the same fundamental ideas.
Here’s a classic example: This is totally sound advice about weightlifting mistakes. It boils down to eat well, don’t lift too light, don’t lift too heavy, and use good form. That’s how you get results. Nothing wrong with it at all, it’s just that I’ve heard it all before. I’ve said the same stuff (though that meal plan sounds more like my breakfast than my daily intake). Good solid advice. Sigh.
But if you wanna keep moving up and away with fitness, I think you hafta find ways to get inspired. Here’s a totally awesome video that is the real deal. Especially perfect for the post-partum among us and the athletes who had to back off activity and are trying to make a comeback. This one redefines badass.
So this came at a good time for me, because I’ve been wanting to set new goals and move up in my fitness-y stuff. I’ve learned by now that when I feel the pull to do something new and different and better, I’d better straddle that shit and ride it home (isn’t that a lovely horse-y porno image?) because you gotta seize inspiration or it just shlumps away and it’s hard to get the fire back. For me, the first step in anything in life is to figure out what it is that I want. Can’t get it if you don’t know what it is. So I really try and make my goals concrete, rather than, “I wanna get in better shape, blah blah.” I try to set them without worrying about how I’m going to get there or what my timeline is at first. Here’s what I want:
-To really advance my weight training, kettlebells, and overall endurance by doing our weight-plyo-so on-style workouts 2-3 times a week, plus at least once a week technical work.
-To box/kickbox twice a week.
-To get back into jiu jitsu and do it twice a week.
-To get back to my more happy weight/size, not super far from where I am now, but a trip nonetheless.
This is in addition to running 5-6 times a week. Sounds ambitious but not impossible. Now, exactly how I’m going to get all this done with my schedule, and where I’ll do some of this training (the BJJ, for example) I don’t know.
But at this point the how is less important. I have my little goals all planned. I’ll probably get even more specific and small within these goals as I advance in them (assuming I do, because sometimes things change or I bite off more than I want to, um, chew) but then it will be stuff like, “I want to beat my bench press record” (and BTW, I do want that.) But for this immediate moment, this is enough. And I blogged ‘em, which is like Picard saying “Make it so, Number One.” So now we see how it goes.
Any goals you are shooting for?

So I am still trying to get my pull up… in the immediate future I need to lose 3 more pounds to get my 20. I’d LOVE LOVE LOVE to get into kettle bell sport, but I feel there probably isn’t enough time between now and when I move to Sacto. Long term I really want to get back into tennis and find a pick up basketball game. I’m sure there is more.

I need SOMETHING.
anything.
I swear Id compete again (bodybuilding) if it WERENT for the messy ick of it all (the faux tanner. the posing suit glue).
perhaps I should just train as though for competition and skip it.
and I wanna try kettle bells.
properly.
with a trainer.
Im boring.
I know.

Lean up, so I can see the muscles (esp abs) Bench press record, learn how to clean and jerk… Fall in love - organically, of course, no hunting. Be a better human being.

Holy. sweet. lord. That is the best, most inspirational video I have ever seen. Redefines bad ass? Please. The definition of bad ass was too scared to have her picture nearby. Way to go!

Thank you so much for posting this video. I totally chocked me up. Yes, bad ass, and determined as hell. And the little kettle bell for baby… AWWWW!!
I like your way of setting goals and then not worrying so hard about how to go about accomplishing them. When you really want something, it seems things have a way of falling into place at the right time. You are one dedicated mama!

I really really want to be able to do a pull-up without kipping. So that’s my goal. And I want to keep improving at KB sport. And I would love to have Maya’s abs.

I watched Maya’s video Fri, and had a 1/2 marathon Sat. I did better than I thought I could…and at mile 9 or 10, thought, “hmm, I don’t push myself. i’m too cautious, too safe. i need to run more and run faster.” So that’s my goal: shave 5-10 minutes off my 1/2 marathon time. Next one is in August. Plus lose 2 more % of body fat. Oh, and I want a six pack like Maya!

Thank you for the incredibly touching words about the video. The past year has been the most challenging time in my life so far. I couldn’t have done it without the support of so many special people–Kelly included. She was the one torturing me in the opening scene as I’m struggling through my very first set of body rows btw. Bitch!
Seriously, as payback for your awesome generosity Kelly, I promise to help you beat whatever weightlifting record you currently crave… Bench press? Push Jerk? KBs? I’m yours!!!
